Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India later this year, with both nations making the necessary preparations for the highly anticipated diplomatic engagement. The announcement was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on March 27, 2025, during an event titled ‘Russia and India: Towards a New Bilateral Agenda’ hosted by the Russian International Affairs Council.
While addressing the gathering, Mr. Lavrov emphasized the strength of India-Russia relations, describing them as deeply rooted in mutual respect and time-tested cooperation. He acknowledged India’s “balanced” approach towards the ongoing Ukraine crisis, reinforcing the significance of India’s role as a key global player in maintaining geopolitical stability.
India and Russia’s Adaptive Diplomacy
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who also spoke at the event, highlighted how India and Russia have displayed “exceptional ability” in adjusting to the evolving world order and newly emerging challenges. He reiterated that both countries have shared a historic and enduring partnership, adapting seamlessly to geopolitical shifts while fostering equal cooperation.
Lavrov further underscored this sentiment, stating, “The relations between our countries have a long history. We can say that they have stood the test of time more than once. Today, Russia and India are developing equal cooperation based on sincere, mutual respect and consideration of each other’s interests.” He also noted the symbolic nature of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first bilateral visit post-re-election in 2024 being to Russia, emphasizing that it is now Russia’s turn to reciprocate the gesture.
Putin’s First Visit to India Since the Ukraine Crisis
Confirming President Putin’s upcoming visit, Mr. Lavrov stated, “Russian President Putin has accepted the invitation of the head of the Indian government. The visit of the head of the Russian state to the Republic of India is being prepared.” This will mark President Putin’s first visit to India since the Ukraine crisis began in February 2022. His last visit was on December 6, 2021, when he attended the 21st India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi.
In December 2024, the Russian government had confirmed that Prime Minister Modi had extended an invitation to President Putin for a visit to India in early 2025. The preparations currently underway signal an effort by both sides to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and strategic ties, further reinforcing the longstanding India-Russia partnership.
As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, this high-level engagement is expected to play a crucial role in shaping future bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including defense, energy, trade, and global strategic alignments. The visit is anticipated to bring forth new agreements and initiatives, solidifying India and Russia’s commitment to deepening their strategic partnership in an increasingly complex global landscape.
