Bangkok, April 4, 2025 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Thailand to participate in the much-anticipated BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) summit. The visit underscores India’s commitment to regional collaboration and is expected to witness high-level discussions on economic integration, connectivity, and security among member nations.
The BIMSTEC bloc comprises seven nations—India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan—working together to enhance trade, investment, and strategic cooperation in the Bay of Bengal region. This year’s summit is particularly crucial as leaders seek to revitalize regional partnerships amid global economic uncertainties and geopolitical shifts.
Upon landing in Bangkok, PM Modi was warmly received by Thai officials and members of the Indian diaspora. He is expected to engage in bilateral talks with several BIMSTEC leaders on the sidelines of the summit, with key discussions centered around economic partnerships, digital connectivity, and maritime security.
Speaking ahead of the summit, PM Modi emphasized the importance of BIMSTEC as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia. “BIMSTEC is a vital platform for regional prosperity, and India remains committed to deepening cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, security, and technology,” he stated.
One of the major highlights of this year’s summit is the anticipated signing of the BIMSTEC Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which aims to boost trade among member countries. India is also expected to push for greater collaboration in infrastructure development, digital connectivity, and disaster management.
Security concerns, particularly in the maritime domain, are likely to take center stage during discussions. With increasing geopolitical tensions in the Indo-Pacific, BIMSTEC members are looking at closer cooperation to ensure stability in the Bay of Bengal. India has already taken steps in this direction by strengthening naval partnerships and boosting joint exercises with BIMSTEC nations.
Apart from diplomatic engagements, PM Modi will also interact with the Indian community in Thailand, a key part of his overseas visits. The Indian diaspora in Thailand, numbering over 250,000, plays a crucial role in strengthening India-Thailand relations. Modi’s outreach to the community is expected to focus on India’s growing global influence and economic progress.
The BIMSTEC summit will conclude with a joint declaration outlining future areas of cooperation and commitments from member nations. With India playing a leading role in regional affairs, Modi’s participation is set to reinforce India’s position as a major driver of economic and strategic partnerships in the Bay of Bengal region.
