Remembering the Man Who Made the Indian Air Force soar

A true titan of the Indian armed forces, the man of unwavering courage, profound vision, and exceptional leadership. He not only shaped the destiny of the Indian Air Force but also left an indelible mark on the nation. His life story is a testament to the power of dedication and bravery, a legacy that continues to inspire generations. Early Life and World War II Valour

Born in Lyallpur in 1919. He joined the Royal Indian Air Force in 1939. His career took off during World War II. He led No. 1 Squadron in Burma. He provided vital intelligence for Allied forces. Lord Mountbatten awarded him the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). This was a rare and profound honour. It was for his valour in battle.

Post-Independence and Leadership

He led the first IAF flypast in 1947. This was over the Red Fort in Delhi. He became Chief of Air Staff (CAS) in 1964. He was only 45 years old then. He led the IAF during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War. The army asked for air support. He famously promised a response in an hour. The IAF launched strikes very quickly. They blunted the enemy’s advance. They gained air superiority. His calm leadership was key to victory. He received the Padma Vibhushan for this service.

A Visionary and National Figure

He modernised the Indian Air Force. He diversified its fleet. He improved training and readiness. He retired in 1969. He served as an ambassador. He was also the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
