India Witnesses Rare Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse

India was captivated last night by a rare and stunning celestial spectacle: a total lunar eclipse, also known as a “Blood Moon.” The cosmic show, the first to be visible nationwide since 2018, began as the Earth’s shadow crept across the lunar surface. The Moon then fully entered the shadow, taking on an extraordinary coppery-red glow for an impressive 82 minutes. Stargazers, scientists, and casual onlookers gathered to witness the phenomenon, which was also seen in parts of Asia, Europe, and Africa. The next total lunar eclipse visible across the country is not expected until December 2028.

In a thrilling finale at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium, the Indian men’s hockey team were crowned champions of the Asia Cup, defeating defending champions Korea with a resounding 4-1 victory. The win marks a historic moment for Indian hockey, as the team lifted the trophy after an eight-year gap. The victory not only secures India’s supremacy in Asia but also qualifies them for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026. The scorers for India were Sukhjeet Singh, Dilpreet Singh (2 goals), and Amit Rohidas, who put on a dominant display of skill and teamwork.

Government Removes Import Duty on US Cotton

In a significant move aimed at supporting the textile industry, the Indian government has temporarily removed the 11% import duty on raw cotton. The exemption, which includes both the Basic Customs Duty and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess, is effective from August 19 to December 31, 2025. This decision, extended from an initial September 30 deadline, is expected to lower input costs for Indian mills and make textile exports more competitive, particularly in light of recent steep tariffs imposed by the US on Indian goods. However, the move has drawn criticism from some farmer groups and political parties who argue it will depress domestic cotton prices and negatively impact local farmers.
